For Nishaea Richardson, entrepreneurship has never been a straight line. Her journey has been one of experimentation, self-discovery, persistence and perhaps most importantly, the willingness to pivot when something no longer aligns with her purpose.
Nishaea is the Founder and CEO of Wealth Phenom LLC, the company behind the recognizable She’s the Budget Guru brand, and is known professionally as The PlayMoney Coach. She works with individuals, businesses, nonprofits, government agencies, and community organizations to make financial wellness more approachable, practical, and connected to the lives people actually want to live. Her philosophy is simple but powerful: financial wellness is about more than numbers.
Wealth Phenom focuses on helping people develop clarity, confidence, and peace of mind around money. Nishaea describes her approach as helping people move away from simply wondering where their money went and toward feeling confident and in control of what their money can accomplish. Her workshops, speaking engagements, and financial wellness programs combine real-world strategies with value-based decision-making.
An Albany native with a professional background in healthcare administration and human resources, Nishaea did not initially set out to become a financial wellness entrepreneur. Her early ventures included health and wellness products and travel services before an opportunity in credit restoration introduced her to the world of personal finance. As Nishaea worked with people to repair their credit, she began noticing a larger issue. Improving someone’s credit score did not necessarily change the financial behaviors, habits, or circumstances that had contributed to their situation. She understood that struggle personally. There had been a time when she had little savings, significant debt, personal loans, maxed-out credit cards, and what she describes as an “unhealthy relationship with money”. Eventually, she decided she wanted something different for herself. She increased her income, took on additional work, began addressing her debt, went through the home-buying process, and started changing not only how she managed money but also how she thought about it. That personal transformation inspired her to help others do the same.
Nishaea pursued formal training through the Financial Coach Academy and became a certified financial coach. She later added credentials including Six Sigma Yellow Belt and the Bank of America Institute for Women’s Entrepreneurship at Cornell. Her business has also achieved MWBE certification through New York State and Albany County and EDWOSB certification.

The Ripple Effect of Investment
As a certified financial coach, Nishaea began educating people online and working with individual clients. But as she worked to turn her knowledge into a sustainable business, she also recognized that she needed guidance on how to structure and operate that business. After asking her network about business resources, Nishaea was advised to reach out to the Community Loan Fund of the Capital Region for their assistance.
After weeks of intensive business planning and informative course sessions led by local experts, Nishaea graduated from the Community Loan Fund’s Winter 2022 Cohort of its 9-week Business Planning Course. The program gave her foundational business education and guidance around the steps required to establish and operate a legitimate business. She also gained greater confidence as a small business owner that she was on the right path and for an entrepreneur without a traditional business background, that guidance mattered. Following the program, Nishaea moved forward with forming her LLC, Wealth Phenom LLC, while continuing to build the brand many people first came to know as She’s the Budget Guru.
As she continued developing her business, she returned to the organization as a volunteer financial education facilitator. The workshops gave Nishaea an opportunity to support other Community Loan Fund clients while building her own experience, visibility, and confidence leading groups. Those opportunities also helped her discover something that would change the direction of her business. Although Nishaea initially built Wealth Phenom around one-on-one financial coaching, she realized that individual coaching was not where she felt most energized. Through facilitating workshops with the Community Loan Fund and later working with other community organizations, she discovered a passion for group financial education and organizational financial wellness programming.
At that point, Nishaea began shifting Wealth Phenom away from being centered primarily on individual coaching and toward workshops, speaking engagements, organizational partnerships, and comprehensive financial wellness programs. The shift in her business focus also created an opportunity for her relationship with Community Loan Fund to evolve from training and volunteer opportunities into a professional partnership. She described the transition as a meaningful milestone for the time she had invested in building her skills and supporting the organization.
Nishaea contracted with the Loan Fund to offer twelve (12) personal financial courses covering topics ranging from budgeting and confident spending to business finances, and money mindset for their Financial Wellness Program. Nishaea later expanded her work with organizations such as the Affordable Housing Partnership and began serving corporate, nonprofit, community, and government clients.
Building Wealth and a Legacy
Wealth Phenom’s Growth and Nishaea’s consistent willingness to pivot has produced tangible results. By what Nishaea described as her third year in business, Wealth Phenom reached profitability, generating profit after expenses. For Nishaea, seeing those numbers on paper represented proof that the work was moving beyond a passion project and becoming a sustainable enterprise. Her advice to other entrepreneurs: “invest in yourself, but make sure the investment truly supports what your business needs. Take time to learn what works for you, understand that success rarely happens overnight, and give yourself room to change direction when necessary.” That philosophy mirrors the message Wealth Phenom now delivers to its clients. Financial wellness is not about perfection. It is about making intentional decisions that support the life you are trying to build.
The growth of Wealth Phenom, LLC highlights what can happen when small business support continues beyond a single class or transaction. The Community Loan Fund provided education at an important stage of Nishaea’s business development, created opportunities for her to gain experience and visibility, and later became a customer of the business she had worked to build.
