For Andrea Rodriguez LMHC, building AR Mental Health Counseling was never just about starting a business, it was about creating a safe, culturally responsive space where people could truly begin to heal. In communities across the Capital Region and beyond, access to culturally relevant, trauma-informed mental health care is not just a service, it’s a lifeline. That belief is the foundation and driving force behind Andrea’s business.

A Mission Rooted in Lived Experience

Andrea’s path into Mental Health Care began long before she opened her independent private practice. Growing up in the Bronx, studying in college and working within the foster care system, she encountered individuals and families navigating deep trauma with limited access to meaningful support. She saw how services often addressed immediate needs but not always the emotional and psychological healing required for long-term stability. This experience only furthered Andrea’s desire to be “in the room,” helping people process, heal, and reclaim their lives.

That vision became AR Mental Health Counseling, a practice centered on trauma therapy, particularly for survivors of abuse. The mission is clear: help clients move beyond survival and toward a life they define for themselves. Today, the practice serves hundreds of clients annually, offering therapy in Spanish, Portuguese, and English. Despite being physically located in Troy NY, the availability of online appointments allows the practice to service individuals across New York State from Buffalo to Long Island.

From Solo Practice to Growing Team

Like many entrepreneurs, Andrea started the business on her own. For four years, she built her practice as a solo provider, balancing clinical care with the demands of running a business. That period brought uncertainty and fear, particularly as a Latina entrepreneur in a field where representation and access are often limited. Still, she remained steadfast. As demand for services increased, Andrea faced a critical question: how could she expand without compromising the quality of care at the heart of her practice? The answer was intentional growth and partnership with the Community Loan Fund of the Capital Region. Through partnership with CLFCR, Andrea was able to secure the financial support needed to expand her practice which included hiring and onboarding staff, relocating to a larger office space and increasing capacity to serve more clients without compromising care.

More Than a Loan: Ongoing Support

What sets the Community Loan Fund apart is its commitment to walking alongside entrepreneurs, not just approving a loan and stepping away. Andrea’s experience reflects that approach. From the initial application process to utilizing the approved funds, the Loan Fund provided guidance, insight, and encouragement. Their team worked to understand her vision, helping ensure that the expansion of AR Mental Health Counseling was both sustainable and aligned with its mission. This kind of support is especially critical for small business owners who are balancing passion with complex operational decisions. For Andrea, it meant having a partner who believed in her work and in the community she serves.

Expanding with Intention

Today, AR Mental Health Counseling has evolved into a growing practice with a team of clinicians and interns working together to meet the needs of a diverse and expanding client base. By building a multilingual practice and prioritizing trauma-informed care, Andrea is helping to close critical gaps in mental health services. Her work empowers individuals to heal, grow, and create new possibilities for their lives.

Andrea’s goal is intentional and  sustainable growth. She plans to bring on a new practitioner each year to expand access to care while maintaining quality and connection. She ensures that all professionals who work for the business align with her values and vision and maintain her standard of personalized, compassionate care. Andrea’s journey is a powerful example of what happens when passion meets purpose and when the right support systems are in place to help a strong vision thrive.
