The Community Loan Fund recently closed on a $600,000 loan to Living Resources Corporation to assist the organization in purchasing and rehabilitating a home in Niskayuna (Schenectady County). Once renovated, the property will be utilized to house five individuals with special needs who are physically disabled.
Since 1974, Living Resources has served as a pillar in our community providing supportive services that allow individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities the ability to live life to their fullest potential. The organization was founded on the belief that happiness and purpose are unique to each person and that a supportive environment is essential for individuals to meet and exceed their personal goals. As of 2024, Living Resources has grown substantially and employs over 850 dedicated staff members who assist more than 1,900 individuals and families. Their mission states that, “Our core purpose is to support and empower individuals with disabilities or other life-challenging conditions to live with dignity, independence, and happiness”.
The $600,000 loan is part of a broader strategy from Living Resources as they enter a new phase of building rehabilitations. Since they have been a committed community partner for over 50 years, many of their original buildings now require updates to meet the needs of the new aging population. Furthermore, having properties such as this one in Niskayuna allows seniors and those with special needs to not only age in place, but create a sense of community amongst residents. Improvements to this building include but are not limited to: a ramp to the front entrance, renovation of two bathrooms to meet ADA compliance, lowering three windows in bedrooms for egress, and installing a sidewalk to connect the rear exit of the building to the driveway.
“Our experience with the Community Loan Fund has been exceptional,” said Deneen Palmateer, Associate Executive Director of Living Resources Corporation.
“They are a great community asset and a valued partner, providing crucial support that enables us to expand our housing inventory and enhance our programs. Their commitment to our mission has helped us create more accessible, barrier-free homes, ensuring that individuals with disabilities can live with dignity and independence. We truly appreciate the partnership of the Community Loan Fund and the positive impact they have had not only on our organization, but the community at large.”
